Broward Sheriff’s deputies have arrested a Florida woman and charged her with first-degree murder in death of a boy in her care.
The Homicide Unit, with assistance from BSO V.I.P.E.R. (Violence Intervention Proactive Enforcement Response) detectives, arrested Lashawn Hampton, 42.
More than four months ago, on Sept. 15, BSO’s Weston District deputies and Broward Sheriff Fire Rescue responded to a call about an unresponsive minor at a home near Glades Parkway and Saddle Club Road.
The boy was pronounced dead on the scene. His name and age have not been released, nor his relationship to Hampton.
Authorities said their investigation revealed the victim suffered from a medical condition that caused him to be bedridden. He appeared underweight and deputies found rashes and bedsores all over the child’s arms, legs, back and torso.
According to detectives, the Medical Examiner’s office determined the boy died from intoxication by the combined effects of acetaminophen and diphenhydramine. His death was ruled a homicide.
A grand jury indicted Hampton for first-degree murder.
The next day, Hampton was arrested at her home in Weston and taken to the Broward Main Jail.
