A Florida woman faces multiple charges after discovering her foster child unconscious in a bathtub, police said.
Lakeisha Mitchell, 41, told Titusville police the child had been throwing a tantrum and was throwing herself on the ground, pretending her legs didn’t work. Mitchell said the child often pretended to be asleep or unconscious, and when the child began to do so, Mitchell said she left the room.
When she returned and the child’s eyes were still closed, she placed the child in a bathtub with water, with the child’s back against the tub. Mitchell then left the room with the child still appearing unconscious, according to records.
When Mitchell returned to the room, she found the child on her side with her face submerged in the water, according to records. Mitchell discovered the child’s lips were blue and called a friend, then 911.
The child was taken to Parrish Medical Center, according to records. While there, injuries were discovered including a bruise above her left eye, scratches and discoloration on her throat, irritation and tearing to her rectal area and bleeding on the front part of her brain.
The injuries were not consistent with Mitchell’s report of the incident, according to records.
Unable to breathe on her own, the child was intubated, records show. She was transported to Orlando Health Arnold Palmer Hospital for Children.
During Mitchell’s initial court appearance, it was revealed that the child was brain dead.
Police did not indicate the child’s age in records or upon request.
Officials with the state Department of Children and Families couldn’t be reached.
Mitchell faces charges of aggravated child abuse and child neglect with great bodily harm. She is being held without bond at the Brevard County Jail.
