A Florida woman who worked as a home health aide is accused of stealing more than $78,000 from an elderly woman in Boca Raton.
Police arrested Maria Liza Soriano on charges of grand theft from a person 65 or older, exploitation of an elderly person or disabled adult, and organized fraud over $50,000.
Investigators said she cashed 43 checks worth $78,740.80 from the 87-year-old woman’s account between December 2019 through February 2021.
The investigation into Soriano began in March when family members noticed the fraudulent checks.
The victim told police she trusted Soriano, who received more than $3,000 a week for her help.
In April, family members told police they received a $2,000 cashier’s check and letter from Soriano, stating the victim offered to lend her money when her husband lost his job, and that she planned to pay the money back.
