A Florida woman is accused knowingly stealing a car that had a 2-year-old boy and a 6-month old boy inside, according to the Highlands County Sheriff’s Office.
The children’s mother left the car running while she went into a Subway in Sebring to order food just before 7:30 p.m., according to HCSO. While the mother was inside, Shauna Marie McGraw, 36, hopped in the car and drove off, deputies said.
The mother reportedly saw McGraw driving away and called 911. McGraw drove a short distance before abandoning the car and running away on foot, according to HCSO.
Deputies found the car and were beginning their search for her when Nakeem Brown, a former HCSO employee who now works as a loss prevention officer for Walmart, saw McGraw running along US-27 and followed her until deputies arrived.
McGraw told deputies she had an argument with her fiancé at a nearby gas station and needed to “get away.” The children were not harmed during the incident, deputies said.
McGraw is facing two counts of kidnapping, two counts of child neglect without great bodily harm and one count of grand theft of a motor vehicle.
