A Florida woman was taken into custody after deputies say she was found unresponsive and under the influence, leaving a child unattended.
Crystal Mathis, 38, is charged with one count of child neglect without great bodily harm.
According to a report from the Escambia County Sheriff’s Office, a witness told deputies he went into the hotel gym to workout when he walked by Mathis by the front door. The witness said Mathis appeared to be asleep with a small liquor bottle next to her and a child was trying to wake her up.
The witness tried waking up Mathis but got no response, the report says. The child told him Mathis had been sleeping for nearly 30 minutes.
Deputies arrived to find the child with only a short sleeve shirt with no jacket or winter clothes, although the temperature was 45 degrees, the report says. Deputies mention the gym is accessed by going outside and passing to large open pools without supervision.
The report says deputies made contact with Mathis who was sitting on the gym floor and appeared to be intoxicated, had slurred speech and stated she had been drinking liquor.
Mathis was arrested and taken to the Escambia County Jail where she has since been released on a $2,500 bond.
