A Florida woman from Ocala is facing aggravated child abuse charges after a 3-year-old child was left in critical condition.
According to police, D’Talya Lewis, 24, was disciplining the child for being difficult. That’s when she hit the girl approximately 30 times with a belt.
Police were called to a residence to investigate a child having seizures. They noticed the child had multiple bruises on her body, so she was taken to a hospital. At the hospital, police officials were told the child had a seizure, and her eyes were bruised.
The Ocala Police Department said the child has a brain bleed on each side of her head.
Lewis told police she struck the child, but not in the head. Lewis’ boyfriend told police the girl was frequently disciplined due to her behavior. On the day in question, he said, Lewis used a belt and the child was “tossing and turning” to avoid being hit.
The child was trauma alerted to the hospital in critical condition, police say. As of this week, the child remains critical.
Lewis was arrested and charged with aggravated child abuse. She was released from Marion County Jail after posting $5,000 bond.
She could not be reached for comment. It is unclear how Lewis and the victim are related.
