A 24-year-old Florida woman has been charged with aggravated child abuse after being accused of shaking a crying 3-month-old baby.
According to the Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office, Evelyn Lopez-Fleites of Bayou Boarwalk was arrested after All Children’s Hospital notified the sheriff’s office that a baby had been admitted with several brain bleeds and multiple retinal hemorrhages consistent with abuse.
Lopez-Fleites said she brought the baby to the hospital after he began having seizures. When detectives initially interviewed her, they said her details about the baby’s injuries were inconsistent.
Detectives interviewed her again at the sheriff’s administration building in Largo and Lopez-Fleites admitted that she picked up the baby and shook him back and forth out of frustration because he wouldn’t stop crying.
Lopez-Fleites was charged with aggravated child abuse and transported to the Pinellas County Jail without incident.
The child is still in the hospital with serious injuries.
This is an ongoing investigation.
