A Florida woman slapped an 11-year-old Black child in the face and hurled a racial slur at him after the boy bumped her car at a go-kart track, police say.
Haley Erin Zager, 30, of Lantana, faces child abuse charges for her actions, according to an arrest report. The charges were bumped up to a second-degree felony because of the racial aspect of the incident, which took place at the Boomers in Boca Raton.
Three Boomers employees witnessed Zager stepping out of her go-kart on the track and smacking the boy, the report says.
Zager told police she was stopped at the end of the race when a car rear-ended her “at full speed.” She said when the child driving the car didn’t apologize, she “tapped” him in the face, according to the report.
When Zager recounted the story to police, she stated that she shouldn’t have hit a child. But after the incident, she did not show the same remorse when she said to an employee: “that f—— n—– hit me in the back,” the report says.
The boy’s father told police another car had rammed into a row of carts, causing a chain of collisions that sent the boy’s cart into Zager’s. Another boy said Zager stepped out of the cart, slapped the boy with an open palm and told a bystander “The n—– hit me. The n—– hit me,” the report says.
The boy Zager slapped gave the same story about his cart getting pushed into Zager’s, but said he didn’t hear what she said when she slapped him because he was still processing what had just happened, the report says.
Police arrested Zager for child abuse and had a female officer search her, the report says. The officer found a metal Altoids tin full of various pills stuffed in her underwear and charged her with four counts of drug possession for the prescription pills, the report said.
Zager left jail on her own recognizance, jail records show. Court records show she’s faced felony charges in Palm Beach County for an aggravated domestic battery case in 2018. Prosecutors chose not to pursue those charges.
