A 75-year-old Florida woman faces multiple charges following two hit-and-run crashes, an aggravated assault and a wrong-way pursuit through St. Johns County by deputies.
The pursuit began about 10:20 a.m. on County Road 210 and continued along several major roads. At one point a deputy said the woman swerved the vehicle directly at him in an unsuccessful attempt to hit his patrol car head-on. The deputy managed to pull out of the way and the suspect continued fleeing and nearly ran down another deputy trying to deploy stop sticks, according to the arrest report.
The woman repeatedly drove the wrong way at high speed, running numerous motorists off the roadway in order to avoid a head-on collision as she fled. Once deputies were able to halt the suspect by using a vehicle maneuver in the 8900 block of Florida 13 and Joe Ashton Road, the woman refused to get out, according to the report.
Janice Lynn Vargo of Haines City was taken to the hospital and faces charges of fleeing police with disregard of the safety to people or property, aggravated assault with a motor vehicle, leaving the scene of a crash involving property damage, obstructing police and reckless driving, according to the report.
